Preparation method

Repeat, correct, simulate.

Preparing for TCF Canada is not revising French: it is making the test familiar. The method comes down to three verbs, applied every week until test day.

The three pillars

What you do every week.

  1. Repeat

The real format, not a summary

Sets of 39 questions in test order, expression prompts by combination, the official durations. You do not practise “around” TCF Canada: you do TCF Canada, several times.

  2. Correct

Every mistake, before the next set

An uncorrected set teaches you nothing. Go back over every missed question, name the type of mistake and write it down. After a few sets, three or four families of mistakes explain most of the points lost.

  3. Simulate

The whole test, on the clock

2 hours 47 minutes of attention has to be prepared. Chain all four tests at least once before test day, to learn your pace and your fatigue.

A typical week

Six short sessions beat one marathon.

Here is a balanced week when you have one to two months left. Your countdown adjusts it to your date.

Adapt this week to my date
  1. Monday

    1 listening set, corrected

  2. Tuesday

1 writing combination in 60 minutes

  3. Wednesday

    1 reading set, corrected

  4. Thursday

Speaking tasks 2 and 3, recorded

  5. Friday

    Review of the week’s mistakes

  6. Saturday

Simulation or a set on your weakest test

  7. Sunday

    Rest

Do and don’t

What the test body recommends, and what costs points.

Do

  • Get familiar with the format and length of the tests
  • Look at sample test items
  • Immerse yourself in French as often as possible: read, listen to the radio, watch television, talk
  • During the test, listen carefully to the instructions
  • Manage your time, especially in reading and writing

Don’t

  • Learning texts by heart to recite them
  • Taking notes during the multiple-choice tests: it is wasted time
  • Chaining sets without ever reading the correction
  • Discovering the speaking format on test day
