Writing TCF Canada

3,273 prompts across 94 monthly sessions. A message, an account, a comparison of two viewpoints: each task has its word count and its traps. Work through prompts organized by session, under test conditions, then get detailed feedback.

The format

Three tasks, three reflexes.

Prompts stay in French, exactly as on test day. In the bank, each combination brings together one prompt of every task.

  1. Task 1

    Short message

A message that describes, recounts or explains, addressed to one or several recipients whose status is stated.

    60 to 120 words
  2. Task 2

    Article or account

An article, a letter or a note reporting an experience, with your comments and your opinion.

    120 to 150 words
  3. Task 3

    Two points of view

Two documents defend opposing opinions on a social issue: compare them, then give your own view.

    120 to 180 words

Prompt bank

Every session

Every session opens in the practice space: the prompts by combination, writing or recording against the clock. The most recent sessions are open with no account.

Method

Four reflexes to build before test day.

A method is useless on test day if it still takes effort. Repeat it on exercises in the real format until you stop thinking about it.

  1. Spot the recipient, the goal and the expected word count.

  2. Sketch a three-line outline before writing.

  3. Write with varied connectors, without exceeding the limit.

  4. Keep five minutes to check agreements and verb forms.

The test

What the test asks of you

  • Communicating a message clearly and giving the information requested
  • Describing, recounting, explaining
  • Justifying a choice, a position, a decision
  • Linking ideas coherently
  • Comparing two viewpoints, then expressing and arguing your own

The traps
  • The word count

Each task has a minimum and a maximum. A task that is too short or missing can get the paper assessed as “A1 not reached”.

  • Copying the prompt

Reusing sentences from the instructions or the documents is penalized. Rephrase in your own words.

  • Off topic

A well-written text that does not answer the prompt earns nothing. Identify the recipient and the goal before writing.

The platform to be ready before test day
